Maria Sharapova vs Christina McHale – Tennis Betting Tips

Maria Sharapova of Russia will compete at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome after organizers gave her a wild card entry to the tournament. This is the third straight time that the Russian was given special help by tournament officials after her controversial comeback weeks ago. She’ll play against Christina McHale of the US in the opening round.

Maria Sharapova

The controversies surrounding Sharapova’s comeback to the sport haven’t died yet weeks after she first competed in Stuttgart. After the confirmation of her scheduled participation here in Rome, it’s reported that England’s Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) would also give her a wild card entry in Birmingham. This has prompted Andy Murray, one of Sharapova’s outspoken critics to speak against that decision. Many other top players also said that the wild cards she received in clay tournaments this year are already too much.

But putting aside all those controversies, we can say that Sharapova’s performance in the first two tournaments she competed after a 15 month suspension is impressive. She reached the semis in her first tournament in Stuttgart before she lost to Kristina Mladenovic. She won her first three tournaments there in straight sets to get to the semis. Mladenovic, who is also the best performing on clay this year had a hard time playing against her. It took her three sets to win against Sharapova 3-6 7-5 6-4. Sharapova did less well in her next tournament in Madrid and only advanced up to the second round there. But after having a long rest, Sharapova is expected to perform better than in Madrid here in Rome.

Christina McHale

25 year old Christina McHale of the US is currently ranked No.44 in the world. This will be the fifth time that she’ll play against Sharapova. She has lost all of her past four meetings with the Russian. Three of those matches were on clay and one of them was also here in Rome. McHale first played against Sharapova in 2009 at the US Open. She was only 17 years old back then and easily lost 6-2 6-1 against the Russian. Three years later they met again in Rome. She did better this time, but still lost 7-5 7-5. A year after that, in 2013 she played against Sharapova for the third time in another clay tournament in Madrid. She lost that match in straight sets again. The result was just the same the last time she played against Sharapova in 2014 in the same tournament.

McHale is seen as the underdog on this match considering the results of her past meetings with Sharapova. Aside from this, she has also performed poorly in her recent tournaments. She lost the opening matches in the last three events she competed. She’s yet to win a match on clay this year.

Our Predictions

I think Maria Sharapova will definitely win this match considering Christina McHale’s present form. I also think she can win this match against the American in straight sets. She has won three of the four past matches she had with McHale this way. I’m sure there’s a big possibility that this match would also end in the same way.

Prediction: Maria Sharapova 2-0, 1.53 @ Bet365
